Rumour: Halo 4 to be launch title for next Xbox
According to the rumours in the October issue of the US Official Xbox Magazine, Gearbox Software is working on the sequel to the Xbox 360 flagship title, Halo 3, for the next generation Xbox… wait, what?!
Though it may seem a little odd at first, believe it or not, there’s more than enough evidence to back up this rumour. While it is known that Bungie is hard at work on a new Halo project, it is not necessarily a Halo 3 follow-up, certainly not when you take into account the developer’s claims that their next project will be totally different from its past endeavours.
Going hand in hand with the rumour is a forum post Gearbox’s top dog Randy Pitchford made back in February, when looking for new talent:
“I’ve started a new project. It’s big. It’s, like, look-at-our-line-up-and-imagine-something-even-bigger kind of big. I’m Directing it myself. I can’t mention it publicly yet. When you find out what this is, you’ll likely agree that I can’t oversell this one. /…/
Note - The project won’t be completed this year, or the next… It will be in pre-production with a smaller, focused team until after both Brothers in Arms Hell’s Highway and Borderlands has shipped.”
If Halo 4 doesn’t fit the bill, we don’t know what does. Still skeptical? What about the fact that the conversion of Halo: Combat Evolved from the original Xbox to the PC was handled by, that’s right, Gearbox. Ah, that’s better, isn’t it? It all makes sense when you connect the dots.
What are your thoughts on this rather tasty rumour?

I wonder who’s the new enemy…
The covenant has been squandered, and all alien races that could exist in the Halo universe were either absorbed into the covenant or destroyed.
Flood versions of extinct aliens would be redundant. And if it has something to do with Onyx I wouldn’t have all that much fun trying to shoot down flying laser beam shooting gizmos.
As for Halo? It wouldn’t be called Halo anymore since that story arc is done, maybe Onyx or something.
I’m debating on the Brutes making a comeback for sure, though we won’t be seeing the Elites or Prophets anymore.
What the fuck are you talking about? This is a multiplayer shooter, why would anyone give a shining shit about a story arc? You’re the reason why games suck now.
And you’re the reason why chefs spit in peoples’ food.
He’s right tho … the story mode is an afterthought in H2, H3
True it’s the multiplayer that drives the game but I happen to focus equally on campaign and multiplayer. I’d never play COD4 if it didn’t have multiplayer, I’d never bother with H3 without multiplayer.
Once I’m done with the campaign and the multiplayer is any good, I’ll play that. True H2 and H3 didn’t have that great of a story to begin with but I had a bit of a good time playing it.
Well different stokes for different folks i guess.
I bought and enjoyed Shadowrun, Saint’s Row, Bioshock, Assassin’s Creed, Mercenaries, The Getaway, Just Cause, GH:I/II, Ninja Gaiden II, etc … which you must not have bought/enjoyed, considering your stance. That sucks for you.
Actually I didn’t like Shadowrun, Bioshock was awesome, Assassin’s Creed was good until it got repetitive and I love Ninja Gaiden 2. I also still very much like Gta 4 and can’t wait for the new content.
Oh and my mistake, I meant to say ‘I’d never play COD4 if it didn’t have campaign, I’d never bother with H3 without campaign.’
Sorry for the slip of word mess up, I can see how that’d confuse.
The biggest thing I take away from this is that M$ sees the 360s replacement coming down the pipe much sooner than the PS3’s … which to me is good news. I’m not fond of the PS3’s controllers and would love to see a Blu-Ray using, completely backwards compatible, PS3 killing XBOX360-2 (720?).
As far as the storyline, I’d rather not speculate … bungie is good enough at teasing and confusing it’s fanbase without them speculating on their own …
This is an extremely large rumour pasted together by other large rumours.
Man I hope this is true. Really, Microsoft should just make a new Halo game every time they come out with a new Xbox. I mean, Halo is basically the main reason the xbox is still alive today. I don’t mean that Halo 1 was the only good game for the xbox. I am just saying that Halo 1 made it so that developer’s started seeing the Xbox as a good console for them to make a game for. I just hope that Gearbox can do a good Job at it.
I’m really getting sick of people thinking there will be a “Halo 4″. The main series finished; it’s like whoever said this never saw the ads for the game, which is extremely unlikely since MS etched the Halo logo on the moon. There will obviously be new entries in the series, but what do you really think is going to happen? It’s like when sci-fi authors came out of the woodwork to write “new” Star Wars material.
This story arc is finished. They may not call it Halo 4, but Believe it the MC will be back.
Here’s hoping they come up with something a little better than “aliens invade earth, and we have to save it”
On the other hand, maybe microsoft intends to make MC its mario? I could see that from a business POV being logical.
that would be very wise on Microsoft’s part
Master Chief Kart? Master Chief Tennis?
Super Master Chief All Stars? Hopefully I can play as Cortana!
This is all rumor at this point. Perhaps it’ll be the mythical “Forerunner” game that made the rounds on the rumor-train last year. It’ll still be in the Halo universe, but it won’t be a “Halo” game.
Also, since PS3 is expecting a 10-year life cycle, it would be in Xbox’s interest to beat them to market by 2-3 years. That way, they can run Sony to the ground (Sony is banking completely on the second half of the PS3’s life cycle to recover its investment in the PS3).
Halo 4? *Big sigh of dissapointment*
Think people… what do writers do after a successfull storyline is finished? They write a prequel!
I think it would be interesting to see maybe a prequel sort of based game maybe. id like to see a squad based game based around 4 or 5 ODST troops. sort of like star wars: Republic commando. that game was interesting and could of been so awesome if more time and $ was put into it. but anyway, the new game would need new enemiy types and alot of freash new themes because the Halo games become so borring and a little over done
Talk about flogging a dead horse! Halo was (is) great but time to move on. I hope for the new console we get some truly original, breathtaking games that set new standards, not more of the same dressed up in nicer clothing.
seconded!
wow

there’s always one ….

or just L2P!!!
LOL @ YOUR PETITION! :P
at least shit from blizz comes out first there, but it may take 10 years at a time for it to.
Sign the petition to stop americans from owning more consoles than any other region! It’s so unfair that companies pander to these people just because they’re a “better revenue stream”, or “it’s the best way for them to make money”!
The marketplace will speak for itself.
I really hope that when the next xbox arrives it does have blu-ray attached
no matter what happens or what is said about halo 4, there will still be a shitload of peeps in line to buy it on release and M$ will make alotta $$$$.
This is 100% true.
The Ending of Halo 3 had more holes in it than swiss cheese. There’s a ton of things they could do For Halo 4. Plus a whole galaxy of forerunner structures and even more rings.
Bingo, that hit the nail on the head
the new storyline is where an unamed eastern bloc country gets trained and armed by a very big western country and well and truly gets its ass kicked again by a very big eastern bloc country…woop
I don’t care about the game, but I might care about the console. If it hits the shelves with the same level of issues as the 360, I’ll pass.
Fool me once, shame on you.
Fool me twice…tell ‘em GW…lol
I don’t care about what the media says about console failures, etc. So far I have had no problems with my console, and I am not expecting one anytime soon.
Bring on the 720
Anybody who’s not rearded would invest in the replacement plan that most stores (Best Buy, Circuit City, Fry’s etc) offer so that if their consoles crap out they can walk in with the broken one, and walk out with a new one.
And if you’re smart like me, you break the one you have and return it days before the replacement plan expires, so you can get a brand new (and probably less likely to fail) console with a brand new manufacturer’s warranty to boot.
I like Halo BUT to hand it off to another studio for development is STUPID! This is Bungie’s project and creation and they should be in charge of a big name title like Halo 4 ESPECIALLY if its going to be a launch title for the 3rd gen Xbox, I mean do you really want some rookie studio developing Halo 4 and screwing it up thus killing the name? *cough *cough Perfect Dark Zero I think not!
PLUS do you really think Halo 4 is even on the horizon? No way I dont see a Halo 3 follow up for at least 5 years, they are going to experiment on new stuff like Halo Wars and god knows what else to see if they can take Halo into a different direction…
Halo Wars is made by Ensemble studios, so the franchise is not strictly Bungie’s plaything anymore. While true, Bungie is making another Halo outing but wouldn’t you think that for any other Halo title that developers would consult Bungie for the rights to make and accuracy to whole Halo Universe?
When Team Ninja was making DOA 4, they collaborated with Bungie on how they can sneak a spartan in their game that would fit to Halo’s History. Yeah, the whole thing may be improbable, perhaps even ridiculous that she traveled back in time but hey, they got a Spartan in modern day DOA.
