Rumor: IPTV to be part of Fall Dash Update

What would be the first thing that would cross your mind if you turned on your dear 360 one day and stumbled across a feature called IPTV? Why, take a few photos and send them to the first gaming site that you can think of, course. And that’s exactly what a gamer going by the name Aaron did in his case.

Instead of picking Xboxic (his loss!), Aaron turned to Xbox 360 Fanboy to share his phenomenon. The story goes like this: Aaron was one of those unlucky chaps whose 360 had bitten the dust, and, as such, was forced to send in the console for some much needed repair. Earlier this week saw the day he got his baby back and, upon firing it up, lo and behold, there was a new feature in the media blade. Had it not been for the description given when highlighting the option, there would’ve been no evidence to assume said feature is the highly anticipated IPTV functionality. See it for yourselves below:

As shown in the first picture, the option features everything you’d expect from such a service. And what about those four text squares next to the TV icon, you might ask? That’s probably due to the fact that the functionality hasn’t been finalized yet, and thus still holds an uninspiring code name.

A safe bet would appear to assume that Aaron has got the Fall Dash Update a bit prematurely. The funny thing is, however, that his dashboard version isn’t an advanced one, or the one with the Fall Update for that matter. It’s the same as everybody else’s, save for the IPTV feature. Therefore, it would be stretching it a bit to say that Aaron is the first 360 user to get his hands on the Fall Update. Whatever the case, it appears IPTV functionality is one step closer to reality.

Post away your thoughts below.

Yes i was wondering that too, what date did the fall update arrive on last year? Can anyone remember? Not that much help but might give us a rough idea.

November 1st last year… so it could be near!
The IPTV function is completely useluss for most of us, as not many internet providers yet support the Microsoft IPTV platform. I’m not even sure if there are any providers that rolled out the system already. It could be part of a previous update but accidentally got activated somehow in the repair facility.

Comment by Scott on 2007-10-27 14:00:22

the microsoft IPTV platform?

What are you on… IPTV is IPTV. All that it will mean is that the ISP would have to charge seperatly for the programme that was being downloaded. The 360 is just used as an extender

Comment by Phrenetic on 2007-10-27 23:03:49

No, IPTV is not IPTV
It’s the same as saying that an Operating System is an Operating System. Still Windows software won’t natively work on a Linux or Apple OS.
There are many different IPTV platforms and they are all incompatible with eachother.

You can read more about the Microsoft IPTV platform (now called Microsoft Mediaroom) and the Xbox 360 IPTV plans in the press release of last january.

Anyone know what service the IPTV would come through? I currently use an IPTV service known as AT&T Uverse here in the U.S.

Comment by Scott on 2007-10-27 13:57:23

US would use the same provider.

The UK on the other hand is a bit more tricky as we still have shit DL speeds (set to go up to 24mbps by the end of the year though…) so it would probably depend on whether which companies offer those speeds.

Those signed up for it at the moment are BT, Virgin and TalkTalk/AOL. So it would probably only be available through those 3 ISP’s.

But BT have there BT vision service which is the same as IPTV so I think that makes it a little trickier.

Comment by Phrenetic on 2007-10-27 23:28:38

AT&T Uverse is powerd by the Microsoft IPTV platform (Microsoft Mediaroom), so it will probably work.

Comment by Steve B on 2007-10-27 13:18:17

I’m hoping it includes support for the Netflix “Watch it Now” feature. MS & Netflix made some kind of undisclosed agreement earlier this year - maybe this was it.

Yes EUPHORIC, it uses AT&T Uverse (at least, according to the original announcment)… good news for you perhaps!

Comment by theanalassassin on 2007-10-27 14:25:55

what is iptv

Comment by KultiVator on 2007-10-27 14:34:08

IPTV is important for the future… but like all things worthwhile, it’ll take time for the infrastructure to develop such that most folks in most countries have access and hopefully regardless of which ISP they happen to use.

I certainly hope we’re not all railroaded down a path where we have to subscribe to a particular ISP… that would suck.

Comment by theanalassassin on 2007-10-27 15:38:11

yeh but what does it do

Comment by Zan Toplisek on 2007-10-27 16:44:51

More useless garbage features. I have digital cable and a usenet account– what the fuck do I need “IPTV” for?? Microsoft can get fucked with their weak-ass updates for morons.

Comment by K-Butch on 2007-10-27 16:32:16

I’m pretty sure BT in the U.K is set for the IPTV as i remember reading about it in an artical when we first started hearing about it…….Im just hoping us in the U.K dont get fucked over again with another useless service.

Comment by Scott on 2007-10-27 20:54:40

as I said before… BT, Virgin and talktalk/aol are signed up to deliver the service.

BT already have theres with BT vision

Comment by spddrcr on 2007-10-27 18:31:00

just signed up for at&t uverse myself, so if the update comes soon ill keep you guys posted.

Comment by strahd on 2007-10-27 18:59:25

No one has been following this over the year huh? I got a cheap hdtv I bought for 100 buck that only accepts Component In and nothing else (needs a $400 fix.) So i did alot of research on this to see if maybe I can get cable sometime in my living room. IPTV was announced last jan it was oringially said that it will be part of the fall update (not offical statements but that was the main goal) and yes the UK will get it MS has partnered with a UK broadcast company to bring it to the UK, I definitly remember reading that I think I read that here.

Comment by Phrenetic on 2007-10-27 23:39:34

The partnership with the broadcast company is most likely for video marketplace content. IPTV is a different thing and indeed announced last januari. In the UK BT offers IPTV from Microsoft.

Comment by snoods on 2007-10-28 14:02:34

It will be this likely, BT in the UK is mentioned.
